Zenith Defy Extreme E Copper X Prix
The third edition was inspired by the Electric Rally Championship.
Released last year, the Zenith Defy Extreme has become the Le Locle brand's boldest and most robust watch, with an unmistakable look and a movement capable of recording elapsed time with astonishing precision. With such an aggressive, bold look, and the ability to mix and match materials, it's also the perfect vehicle for a spirit of collaboration and racing. As the official timekeeper and founding partner of Extreme E, an off-road racing series that uses electric SUVs in remote parts of the world, Zenith has released several special edition models, the latest being the Zenith Defy Extreme E Copper X Prix.
For the latest race in the 2022 Extreme E Championship, the team is moving off the beaten track in South America, a first for an electric rally car championship. Chile's Atacama Desert, one of the world's most important copper mining areas and an area where innovative and sustainable methods are used in its operations, presents the watchmaker with the third special edition watch commemorating the Extreme E competition Foundation. The collection's classic innovative materials are now matched with earth tones reminiscent of the region's copper mines, while incorporating elements of championship recycling and upcycling.

The new Zenith Defy Extreme E Copper X Prix shares most of the same elements as the classic Defy Extreme, with most updated materials and colors. Made from lightweight and durable carbon fiber, this version includes the crown and chronograph pushers. Both the button protector and the twelve-sided bezel are made of contrasting micro-sprayed titanium. The dial is skeletonized to reveal the movement through a tinted sapphire crystal, with copper-brown accents reminiscent of the dry, rocky terrain and copper mines of the Chilean desert. Displays include central hours/minutes, small seconds at 9 o'clock, 60-second and 30-minute counters, and the frenetic central seconds hand provides 1/100th of a second measurement, making one revolution per second.

Under the hood of the Defy Extreme E Copper X Prix is the in-house automatic chronograph movement El Primero 9004. The main feature is to take the iconic high frequency concept to a whole new level with two regulator architecture. One beats at 5Hz and adjusts the time. Another independent and activated together with the chronograph, beating at 50 Hz or 360,000 vibrations per hour, is responsible for the 1/100th of a second chronograph. The movement is also visible through the back of the sapphire display, which is emblazoned with the Copper X Prix logo.
These races also bring sustainability and environmental awareness to the forefront, so this version of the Zenith Defy Extreme is worn on a rubber strap infused with the upcycled Continental CrossContact tire material used in the first season of racing. Here, it features a black rubber central element surrounded by brown Cordura-effect rubber inlays. It also comes with two additional black rubber and black Velcro straps that can be easily replaced with a quick-change strap mechanism.
